Coast Guard’s Swift Action

In a display of vigilance and efficiency, the U.S. Coast Guard successfully intercepted a vessel carrying 132 Haitian nationals southeast of the Florida Keys. The operation, part of the ongoing efforts to secure American maritime borders, took place approximately 50 miles southeast of Marathon, Florida. The Coast Guard cutter Escanaba responded promptly to intelligence provided by aircrews from Customs and Border Protection Air and Marine Operations and Coast Guard Air Station Miami.

The intercepted vessel, a 30-foot boat, was found to be dangerously overloaded with people. It was sailing in the waters between Cuba and Cay Sal Bank, attempting an unauthorized entry into U.S. territory. This interception underscores the Coast Guard’s commitment to maintaining the integrity of American borders and preventing potentially hazardous maritime situations.

Humanitarian Approach and Repatriation

Following the interception, the Coast Guard demonstrated a balance of law enforcement and humanitarian considerations. The Haitian nationals were processed to determine their origin and provided with essential care. This included food, water, shelter, and basic medical attention, ensuring their well-being during the repatriation process.

This incident is not isolated. Since October 1, 2024, the Coast Guard has repatriated 313 Haitians, indicating a persistent challenge in managing illegal maritime migration. The Coast Guard’s actions align with its mandate to protect national security while also ensuring the safety of those attempting these dangerous sea crossings.

Operation Vigilant Sentry

The interception was carried out under the auspices of Operation Vigilant Sentry, a collaborative effort between the Coast Guard and the Homeland Security Task Force – Southeast. This operation is part of a broader strategy to combat illegal maritime migration and enhance maritime security in the region.

The Coast Guard emphasized that the operation is “designed to protect the safety of life at sea while preventing unlawful maritime entry to the United States and its territories.”
