Soft On Hamas? DC Ambitions Rise

A Mamdani-backed socialist candidate who mocked “ugly colonizer women” and joined a post–Hamas massacre rally is now trying to talk her way into Congress.

Story Snapshot

  • A Mamdani-endorsed congressional hopeful joined an October 8, 2023 rally critics say celebrated Hamas terror.[2]
  • The candidate has attacked men for “fetishizing ugly colonizer women” and questioned Israel’s right to exist in old posts.
  • She later condemned Hamas but only after first refusing to do so when pressed at a forum.[1]
  • Her campaign is boosted by New York City Democratic Socialists of America and far-left national groups.[6]

Socialist Candidate, Radical Rallies, And A Bid For Congress

Darializa Avila Chevalier is running for Congress in New York’s 13th District with the full backing of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and the New York City chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America.[2][6] She is a former Columbia campus encampment organizer and longtime activist who now wants to take that worldview to Washington.[3] Her campaign platform lines up with the far left: abolish Immigration and Customs Enforcement, expand government housing, and pour more federal money into New York City programs.[1]

Her record on Israel and Jewish safety is drawing the most fire. On October 8, 2023, just one day after Hamas murdered and kidnapped Israeli civilians, she attended a New York City rally that media reports say “feted Israeli deaths” and was widely condemned by local leaders as condoning Hamas violence.[2] The rally, organized by hard-left groups, featured signs that read “Resistance is justified when people are occupied,” a slogan many see as a green light for attacks on Israelis, including civilians.[2]

From Hamas Rally To “U.S. Is Worse” Rhetoric

Avila Chevalier has defended her role in that October 8 rally by saying she has “been advocating for the human rights of Palestinians” her entire adult life and that she feared an “outsized reaction that costs thousands of people their lives.”[2] She frames her remarks as human-rights talk, not praise for Hamas. But the timing—less than twenty-four hours after a massacre—and the tone of the event make that defense hard to swallow for many Americans still grieving those murders.[2]

At a later March forum, she was asked directly if she would condemn the Hamas attack and declined to do so on the spot.[1] Only later, in a radio interview, did she finally say “yes, I do condemn Hamas,” while quickly pivoting to blame the United States for funding the Israeli military.[1] Critics argue that this pattern—softness on Hamas, harshness on America and Israel—shows where her instincts really lie. Supporters insist she is just criticizing policy, but her hesitation spoke louder than her later cleanup statement.[1]

Deleted Tweets, “Colonizer Women,” And The Pattern Of Extremism

Concerns go beyond one rally. A review by CNN’s KFile found that Avila Chevalier deleted tweets and retweets calling for abolishing police, prisons, and borders, as well as posts questioning whether Israel has a right to exist.[5] Those same reports highlight her online attacks on Democrats who are not radical enough, painting a picture of a candidate who does not just want to tweak policy but wants to tear down core institutions. Her rhetoric about “colonizers” and Western women fits that pattern of extreme identity politics.

One viral remark slammed men for “fetishizing ugly colonizer women,” a phrase that drips with racial resentment and contempt for the West. That kind of language is not a minor slip. It tells voters how she views many American families, including interracial couples and the women in them. When paired with her willingness to attend a rally accused of cheering Israeli deaths, it raises serious questions about how she sees Jews, Christians, and anyone tied to Western culture and history.[2]

Backed By The Socialist Machine And A Warning For Voters

Despite this record, Avila Chevalier is not some fringe protester on the edge of politics. She is on the ballot as a Democratic candidate for Congress and has racked up support from Justice Democrats, New York City Democratic Socialists of America, and other left-wing groups who want her in Washington.[5][6] Mayor Mamdani has promoted her as part of a broader slate of democratic socialists to reshape New York and national politics from the far left.[2][6] This is a deliberate project, not an accident.

For conservative and moderate voters alike, her rise is a clear sign of where the progressive movement wants to go. A candidate who once refused to condemn Hamas on the spot, who joined a rally accused of celebrating slaughter, who deleted posts calling to abolish borders and questioning Israel’s existence, is now being sold as the future of the Democratic Party.[1][2][5] That should set off alarm bells for anyone who cares about national security, American allies, Jewish safety, and basic respect for our country.
