Area 51 may have just exposed the long roots of the F-47, and the air over Groom Lake looks more serious than ever.
Quick Take
- A thermal image near Area 51 shows a tailless jet with canards that looks unlike any public aircraft.
- Project Fear released the footage after an early teaser, and one witness said the image was real.
- Anders Otteson said the sighting could be the first public look at an NGAD technology demonstrator.
- Air Force and Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency records show the F-47 program has deep roots in earlier test aircraft.
What the Area 51 Footage Shows
Project Fear shared a thermal image and related footage that appear to show a low-flying aircraft near Groom Lake, the restricted test area known as Area 51.[2] The shape has cranked-kite wings, canards, and a tailless look that has pushed many observers toward the Boeing F-47 and the Next Generation Air Dominance program. The image spread fast because it looked technical, not theatrical, and because it came from one of the most secret places in American aviation.
The strongest support for the image’s authenticity came from Anders Otteson, who runs Uncanny Expeditions and has tracked unusual aircraft activity around Area 51 before.[2] He told The Aviationist that the image was real and shot on the same model of thermal device he owns. He also said it was likely the first public sighting of the sixth-generation Next Generation Air Dominance technology demonstrator, which would make the clip more than a random night shot.
Why the F-47 Connection Took Off
The F-47 link did not come from thin air. The Air Force awarded Boeing the Next Generation Air Dominance development contract in March 2025, and officials said the program would produce a small number of test aircraft for evaluation.[15] Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency records also say Boeing and Lockheed Martin built X-planes that first flew in 2019 and 2022, logging several hundred hours.[16] That gives the Area 51 clip a real context, not just online hype.
That history matters because the Pentagon has already said the public renderings of the F-47 do not fully show the real aircraft for operational security reasons.[10] The official line leaves room for a hidden test shape to look different from the art people have seen online. Still, the footage does not prove the jet is a production F-47. It could show a demonstrator, a related test article, or another classified aircraft built for the same program.
What Can Be Said with Confidence
The safest reading is simple: the footage appears to be real, but the aircraft’s exact identity is not confirmed.[2] The shape fits the broad direction of the F-47 program, which the Air Force says is meant to be a sixth-generation fighter with a long range, high speed, and low visibility.[10][15] That alone makes the sighting important. If the image is what supporters think it is, then America is already seeing the test phase of a major air power project.
There is also a wider pattern here that conservatives will recognize all too well. When government programs hide behind secrecy, taxpayers are told to trust the process while very little is shown in public. Area 51 has long been the place where classified aircraft appear first, and then the public gets scraps later.[22][26] This clip fits that old pattern. It is either a real glimpse of a new warplane or a reminder that the government still prefers mystery over plain answers.
