TV Host’s Bodycam Moment Sparks Backlash

Son Caught on Active Railroad Tracks

Officers said “No Trespassing” signs were posted in the area. Gabriel told police he was working out and did not realize it was off-limits. Officers could have charged him with a criminal misdemeanor but chose to issue a simple civil trespass violation instead.

Sunny Hostin was on the phone with her son when police stopped him. She drove to the scene and immediately began arguing on his behalf. The bodycam footage captures her saying: “My name is Sunny Hostin and I’m one of the co-hosts of ‘The View’ and I’m a former federal prosecutor.” She also told officers her son “has no criminal record” and pushed them not to issue the citation. Harvard Card, Letter to the DA

Beyond the scene with police, Hostin took her efforts further. Court records show she listed herself as her son’s legal representative. She also wrote a formal letter to the New Rochelle district attorney’s office asking them to drop the case entirely. In that letter, she pointed to Gabriel’s Harvard University graduation and his lack of any prior criminal record as reasons the charge should be dismissed.

The case was still on the court calendar as of the time the bodycam footage went public in mid-July 2026. Gabriel was scheduled to appear in court on July 31. Hostin argued her son had mistakenly believed the area was open to the public, despite the posted signs.

The Hypocrisy Is Hard to Miss

Hostin has spent years on “The View” criticizing privilege — the idea that wealthy, connected, or famous people use their status to escape consequences that ordinary Americans cannot. Yet the bodycam footage shows her doing exactly that. She name-dropped her TV show, invoked her legal background, and cited her son’s Ivy League education — all in an effort to influence police officers doing their jobs.

The officers deserve credit here. They heard her out, stayed professional, and issued the citation anyway. That is how it is supposed to work. The law should apply the same way whether your mom is on television or not. Most Americans — the ones who can’t call in a famous parent or write letters to the district attorney — already know that. Hostin apparently needed a reminder, and the bodycam made sure the rest of the country got to see it too.
